"There Is Nothing Like a Lox" - Another Allan Sherman Lost Song Treasure
Last month we previewed Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman, Mark Cohen's new biography of the king of musical parody. In the preview that included 76 Sol Cohens, a spoof of 76 Trombones from "The Music Man", we promised that we would share more of the lost gems that Cohen discovered during the research that he did for the book.
Here is another item from the collection. There is Nothing Like a Lox, another one of his "Goldeneh Moments From Broadway," is a parody of There is Nothing Like a Dame from Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (Sherman joked that it should be from South Passaic).
And just in case you don't remember the Rodgers and Hammerstein original, the Shermanesque version is followed by a clip from the 1958 film starring Rossano Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor.
Enjoy!

BRILLIANT EVEN FOR HIM.
ReplyDeleteYou ought to start a part of your blog dedicated to lox photographs and lox art from all over the world.
ReplyDeleteEntirely contrived. Early Jackie Mason was FUNNY; he presented great situation stories along with wonderful characterizations.
ReplyDeleteThis guy depends on the substitution of key Jewish-sounding words and images like "lox" and "kosher" set into a familiar Broadway song.
Mickey Katz did that as well, but he was a genuinely FUNNY person with or without his recordings. And his accompaniments always offered authentic Jewish sounding music played by high-level musicians.
Allan Sherman THINKS he's funny, but I do not.
This is not one of his better paradies but I enjoyed Sherman so much, I would even listen to this.
DeleteWOW-----Why so hostile? Obviously you wren't around in the 60's when everyone had SO MUCH
DeleteFUN singing along with Allen to his songs--especially "Hello Muddah, etc" Some of my best memories are singing along with my family to this album, kibbitzing and celebrating our Jewishness and pride in Mr.Sherman's intelligent, clever and TRULY heartwarming parodies. Anything that provides THAT,in my book is a VERY GOOD THING----as apposed to kvetching and being generally farbissiner.....LIGHTEN UP,Bubela!
Hey anonymous, Contrived?? like the answer to the remark "Whats so special about a chicken laying an egg? The answer is CAN YOU DO IT?
