Comedy Showcase: Chaim Cohen's Kosher Clean Lakewood Comedy for Frum Audiences

Jewish humor comes in many flavors, and we try to bring you all of them. One highly specialized form of Jewish humor is kosher clean comedy for frum (very observant) audiences.

There aren't many frum comedians who perform for frum audiences. We discovered one from Lakewood, New Jersey (a very religious Jewish enclave) named Mike (Chaim) Cohen who performs clean standup comedy.

One characteristic of this comedy is that it includes references in Hebrew and Yiddish that are unfamiliar to audiences outside of the frum world. If you know these words, the jokes can be funny. If you don't, you can figure some of them out from the context.

Here are translations of these expressions:

Shiurim = religious talks
Bechira = choice
Sholom bayis = peace in the home
Rosh chodesh = first day of the Hebrew month
Halacha = the body of religious law derived from the Torah
Kavana = a serious mindset needed for Jewish rituals
Davening = prayer
Tefilas HaDerech = travelers' prayer

Enjoy!

  1. He should skip the women/marriage jokes. Get new material, and keep practicing.
