Yiddish Comedian and Entertainer Hy Wolfe Sings "I'm a Litvak, She's a Galitz"

Hy Wolfe is a longtime Yiddish theater actor and president of the Hebrew Actors Union. He grew up in Brownsville, a Brooklyn neighborhood once home to a large community of Yiddish-speaking Holocaust survivors.

On Monday Wolfe was featured as one of five Yiddish comedians who were interviewed by Forverts editor Rukhl Schaechter in a Zoom webinar on What Makes Yiddish Humor So Jewish?

Each participant gave examples of Yiddish humor, and Wolfe's example was a classic patter song by Eli Basse titled I’m a Litvak and She’s a Galitz, a song about a happily married couple who love each other very much, except that they speak different Yiddish dialects and can't get along.
